Odd story about this quote. It comes from a page from a book. I found this page on the ground while walking home from the library one day. It has been in the elements for some time; ran over, stepped on, wet then dry. It is now hanging on my wall.
But Im well aware of a partial letter Lee wrote to his wife, apparently explaining his harsh treatment of slaves, where he essentially tells her slavery is ordained of God, and while we can pray for slavery to end, pain is "necessary for their instruction" and that God (Merciful Providence) "intends and knows" that slaves "must endure painful discipline".
The letter can be read to SEEM to mean Lee was against slavery, but a close reading of it, without wishful thinking, its actually a very strong defense, written carefully, in defense not only of slavery itself but the pain involved Lee even says slavery is a political evil or moral evil -- and that's supposed to mean he is anti slavery. Read the next sentence -- it's an evil for WHITES, whites are the ones that suffer, blacks are "immeasurably better off".
WHen you tie his letter together with the facts in his slave ledgers -- that he often had slaves whipped, and personally ordered the whippings, and even screamed at slave girls during their torture, according to newspaper reports from before the Civil War, you get a much different image in your head.
